RESEARCH

Research is a critical part of Independent Study and Mentorship. Through my research I have been able to learn about various softwares and techniques needed for the animation industry.

WALK CYCLE

Research Assessment 5

In the animation industry animation cycles are very important to all types of work including video games and film. Animation cycles are often used to create a rhythmic locomotion for a specific animal or human that occurs naturally. Common animation cycles include walk cycles, run cycles, jump cycles and many other types depending on the character. All of theses cycles are used many times in many pieces of content and have a basic standard that all animators tend to learn. One of the most common animation cycles is the walk cycle since it is such a ubiquitous type of locomotion in the natural word.

SPLINE PASS

Research Assessment 4

An animator in the modern computer animation industry needs to have a strong understanding of splines and be able to edit tangent handles and curves using the graph editor. One of the final stages of creating an animation is the spline pass in which the animator smoothens the animation by changing the tangents to spline and using the graph editor to edit them. This technique is very important to animators since it allows animators to polish their work and fix any issues caused by the automatic interpolation in animation software.

ARCS IN ANIMATION

Research Assessment 3

An animator needs to have a strong understanding of the twelve principles of animation in order to create high-quality animation. These principles were originally outlined by Walt Disney Animation Studios in the 1930’s for hand-drawn 2D animation. However, these principles are just as critical in modern computer animation as they were for old Disney animation. There are 12 concepts that make up the principles of animation that were first published in, “The Illusion of Life” by Ollie Johnston and Frank Thomas.  Now, these concepts are taught to animators through various exercises like a bouncing ball and a tail wave that show most of the principles.

POST ASYLUM

Interview Assessment 5

To create lifelike animation animators must first have a strong understanding of the 12 principles of animation. These principles were created by Walt Disney and the “old men” of Disney Animation studios in the 1930’s for the hand-drawn animation of the time. The 12 principles were used by Disney for decades to create beautiful hand-drawn animation and believable motion. (Porter and Susman 2) These principles were then published in The Illusion of Life a book by Ollie Johnston and Frank Thomas in 1981. However, these principles are just as applicable to modern computer animation and can be seen in all good animation.

CAREER OUTLOOK

Research Assessment 1

The animation industry is an extremely competitive field filled with growth and opportunity encompassing numerous studios and talented professionals. The growth and improvement that has been consistently seen in the animation industry also add to the future opportunities in the industry. The animation industry has been improving with technologies such as virtual reality in recent times which will likely affect the future greatly and generate employment and opportunity in new fields for the future. However, currently, industry professionals usually specialize in a specific area that is part of the animation pipeline.  Most studios follow a standard animation pipeline that includes development, pre production, production, post production similar to live action. (Hurwitz 1)  Personally, I am most interested in modeling and animation which are both portions of the production of the pipeline.
