ORIGINAL WORK ASSESSMENT

My overarching objective in creating this scene was to learn more about 3D modeling in Maya and to be able to create more in complicated models and compile scenes. I decide to approach this goal by creating multiple assets that I could later compile into a complete scene. I felt that this task would allow me to learn more about how to approach difficult modeling tasks in the future, and also allow me to create  something at a high quality that I could showcase in a portfolio. Once I had decided that I wanted to model a complete scene I decided that I would model a toymaker character and his work environment.

ORIGINAL WORK PROPOSAL

For my original work I want to design and model a toymaker and his work environment using 3D modeling software. This model will be pushing the rudimentary skills in modeling I have with Maya by requiring more complex organic forms and very detailed models for the work environment. My end product will specifically be some simple concepts art of the character and environment with the 3D model being the main portion. This model will have numerous elements in addition to the character including a workbench, tools, and various half made toys  littering the scene. This scene will include many things I have not done before including creating a model of a  character.
To create this model I will have to go through multiple steps including working through more tutorials on modeling to learn about more complex environments and character modeling. These tutorials will mainly be from Pluralsight a certified tutorial site for Autodesk software. This will allow me to gain the new skills I will need in order to achieve my goal of modeling a scene that will push me to improve my skills. Regarding the creation of my product I will have to go through multiple phases in order to create a cohesive scene. I will first have to make some concept art in order to visualize my character and his environment. This will require a few renditions of my character to create a final character concept.  Furthermore, for the environment and tools I will be creating basic concept art to understand the various elements I will want to include. After my concept art is complete I will begin modeling which will be the most time consuming phase and will require the most work. For the majority of my modeling I will be using Autodesk Maya an industry standard modeling software that will allow me to create my product. I will be using various tools in Maya in order to create my models and will have to learn about more tools in order to create some of my assets. After I have my entire scene modeled I will need a way to effectively display all of the assets in an appealing way. In order to do this I plan on animating a camera to move through the scene to look at all of the various assets. This will allow me to effectively display my original work at the research showcase and will also allow me to learn how to animate a camera effectively. Overall I think this original work will give me more hands on experience with modeling and will allow me to learn techniques from various sources and apply them as needed to create my own product.
From my original work I hope to challenge myself while creating a foundation for my future both in ISM and in the animation industry.  This will be a very challenging project as I have not done anything of this size and difficulty in modeling. Furthermore, it will require me to learn and apply skills from various tutorials regarding modeling and camera animation to my own ideas and creations. This will also help me better understand the animation pipeline and the various aspects of the pipeline in more depth. Understanding the various aspects of the pipeline and improving skills in many areas will allow me to have a better understanding of what I want to specialize in later on. In general I think that this product will allow me to challenge myself by using new skills in a way that will create a foundation to improve upon for my final product.
